How To Feel Confident In Front Of The Camera (Even If You’re Awkward)
Intro
Let’s clear something up right away. Almost every senior who steps in front of my camera starts by saying something along the lines of “I’m awkward” “I don’t know what to do with my hands” “I’m not photogenic.” And almost every single one leaves saying, “wait…that was actually fun.” Here’s the truth: Confidence in photos is not something you either have or don’t have. It’s something that builds and usually faster than you expect.
Feeling Awkward Is Normal (Like…. Extremely Normal)
Being photographed is weird. Someone is watching you, telling you where to stand, and pointing a camera at your face. If you weren’t a little awkward at first, that would be suspicious. The good news? Awkwardness usually lasts about 5 minutes.

You’re Not Expected To Know How To Pose
That’s my job not yours. You don’t need modeling experience. A Pinterest board of poses. A “good side.” You do need to a willingness to move, trust in the process, premission to not be perfect. I guide everything, where to stand, how to move, what do to with your hands. So you are never guessing!
Movement Beats Posing Every Time
Standing still and holding a pose is where things get awkward. Walking, shifting your weight, playing with your jacket, laughing mid-movement. That’s where confidence shows up. Movement feels more natural and looks more relaxed and gives you something to do.

Confidence Shows Up After You Stop Thinking About The Camera
The best photos almost never happen at the beginning of a session. They happen when you stop overthinking. You forget about your facial expressions. And, you start being yourself! That’s why sessions are designed with time built in. Confidence needs space.
You Don’t Have To Be “Photogenic” To Look Amazing
Photogenic isn’t a personality trait. It’s the result of good light, direction, comfort, and a photographer who knows how to read people. You don’t need to change who you are. You just need someone who knows how to photograph you.

Final Thoughts
You don’t need to walk into your senior session feeling confident. You just need to show up. Confidence will take care of the rest. Awkward moments included.
